Eye Lid Operation (blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty is one of the most popular surgical procedures. Eyelid surgery is a procedure to remove fat-usually along with excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can lift drooping upper lids and reduce the puffy bags that form below your eyes.

Upper and lower eye-lids can be done at the same time but more swelling, bruising and a longer time of healing need to be expected.

How long does the surgery take?

  • The upper eye-lids are done under a local anesthesia as an outpatient surgery and takes an hour
  • The lower eye-lids are done under a partial general anesthesia and requires overnight stay at the clinic
  • The upper and lower eye-lids are done under a general anesthesia and requires overnight stay at the clinic

What will happen in the recovery period?

After surgery the surgeon will may apply a bandage. Some bruising and swelling will be experienced during the second and the third weeks, however the majority of the swelling usually subsides after the first 10-14 days. Your eyelids may feel dry at first but eye drops can help with this. Any sutures are usually removed after 4-6 days. Scars will form as a result of the surgery. Overall these scars heal relatively well but will differ in each individual patient.

Recovery varies from patient to patient and it is advisable to take it easy for the first week after surgery. Most people are ready to go out and return to work after a week to 10 days. You should keep your activities to a minimum for three to five days and avoid more strenuous activities for about three weeks.Avoid any activity which would put stress on the incision sites or that would cause elevated blood pressure.  For one to three weeks after your eyelid surgery, you should avoid heavy lifting, bending and participating in active sports.

What can I expect from the surgery?

Your expectations need to be realistic. It is important to be realistic about how much skin can safely be removed. If too much skin is removed, the eyelid will not fuction properly. It is also important to realize that the final reset cannot be judged for many weeks after the procedure because swelling of the eyelid from the procedure can make the eyelid look abnormal.
