Laser resurfacing
Acne is a very common skin condition that can affects over 80 percent of teenagers and young adults. These cases vary in intensity from mild to severe. Those with only mild cases may restore the health of their skin without any permanent effects. However, those who have more severe cases of acne will often have to deal with permanent scarring. Some gels and creams promise to eliminate signs of past acne. More frequently, however, acne scar removal will necessitate more serious surgical procedures and skin resurfacing such as laser resurfacing.
Skin Resurfacing
Skin resurfacing methods are usually more common in the treatment of shallow or surface scars. These types of treatments are meant to eliminate damaged surface cells by completely removing the outermost layers of skin. Resurfacing procedures make room for new healthy skin to heal in place of the damaged tissue. The removal of surface layers levels facial imperfections and smoothes the skin. One of the most successful resurfacing techniques is laser resurfacing.
Laser Resurfacing
This treatment is suggested for many types of skin irregularities. The laser (YAG LASER BURANE) effectively burns off the top layers of the skin. Therefore allowing newer and healthier skin to heal in its place. Laser is short for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. These lasers work by producing an intense beam that gently vaporizes skin tissue to improve skin imperfections such as acne scarring. The newest laser systems allow more control over the depth of penetration into the skin's surface which increases the level of precision and safety of these procedures.
Erbium lasers release energy in a wavelength that penetrates the skin, combines with the water found in skin cells, and the disperses heat. This produces more precision and consequently minimizes the damage to surrounding skin.
The procedure
Before any operation it is neccessary to undergo a consultation where you will be advised about various optimal methods and general information about laser treatment.
- The procedure is carried out under a general aneasthetic and requires overnight stay at the clinic
- Post-operation it is neccessary to avoid the sun for 3-4 months
- We recommend you apply a suncreen protection (UV 50+)
After Treatment Expectations
Discomfort is normal during and after the procedure and it is important to maintain your skin moist with ointment and covered with surgical bandages for the days following the surgery. Skin should be kept out of the sun, and a fine crust is likely to develop for a few days after the treatment. In particular cases people may experience a pink surface color for a few days to a few months after surgery. Make up can be worn after 1 to 2 weeks after the treatment.
The risks of scarring and significant complications are low. Other common side effects are crusting, mild swelling, redness or discoloration. These can be minimized with post procedure care routines. Laser resurfacing techniques can be effective, however, they are pretty abrasive in their methods. It's important to talk to your dermatologist about what scar removal procedures are appropriate for your skin condition.
