Glycolic acid is a naturally occurring acid derived from sugar cane. It is one of a larger family of acids called alpha hydroxy, or fruit, acids. Glycolic acid is commonly used in chemical peels applied to the skin. The peel exfoliates the top layer of the skin and stimulates collagen growth. A glycolic acid peel or series of peels can be used to treat hyperpigmentation, dry skin, fine wrinkles and acne. It is not absorbed into the body and will not cause any systemic side effects like chemicals used in other peels.
The Glycolic Acid helps reduce the cell "build up" at the lower levels of the skin. This has a profound effect on the skin by reversing the abnormal cellular attachments caused by sun damage and aging. Glycolic acid has shown to produce increased amounts of collagen in the skin. It improves acne scarring, treats acne, skin discoloration and refines the coarse texture of the skin. After just a few weeks your skin looks brighter, clearer and dry skin becomes re-hydrated and smooth.
The recommended treatments are 4 to 6 treatments within a week or 10 days span of time. The treatment takes appr. 45 minutes.
The depth of the resurfacing facial peel is controlled by three factors:
- the concentration of the glycolic acid
- the length of time it is applied
- the preparation of the skin
It is therefore important to appreciate that all individuals who wish to receive this treatment should be on the home care program using the Renophase Glycolic acid based products during the coarse of the treatments and after the treatments are done. This will ensure the best results.
Before the procedure
Come for a free consult with our professional cosmetologist to discuss your skin history.
If you have a history of keloid scars or bad reactions to the sun or burns you should not have deep glycolic peels.
The procedure
Doctor will cleanse you skin with a special Renophase emulsion and than will apply the peel of appropriate concentration (Step 1) to your skin. The glycolic acid will be allowed to sit on your skin for several minutes. You will feel slightly burning and tingling sensations where the peel is applied. Tell the doctor when your skin starts to feel very uncomfortable. This usually signals that the peel is ready to be neutralized (Step 2). Special cream will be applied immediately following your procedure (Step 3), and then you must continue to apply it for several days afterward.
What to expect
You’ll see noticeable results even after one procedure. By the third treatment results are more evident. Skin should appear light pink with a soft texture. Some patients may experience a light peeling within the next few days. Treatments are usually performed in six or more sessions with the 7-10 days intervals. Maintenance treatments can be done every four to six weeks.
For the best and long lasting results we recommend to do glycolic peel procedure twice a year and use special Renophase products for home use.
