Breast reduction/uplift

Breast reduction

Large breasts can dominate a woman's appearance and make you look unbalanced and make exercise difficult or even impossible to do. Breast reduction is a procedure for reshaping exceptionally large breasts surgically to increase your comfort and satisfaction. Overly large breasts frequently have a considerable affect on self-confidence and can even affect personal relationships. The aim of surgery is to give you smaller, shapelier breasts that are in proportion to the rest of your body.

What does the surgery involve?

The most common procedure involves vertical line incision that circles the areola and extends down in a vertical line.  Excess breast tissue, fat and skin are then removed and the nipples and remaining underlying tissues are then moved to a new higher location. The skin from both sides of the breast is then brought down and around the areola shaping the new contour of the breast and sutured.

Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours depending on each individual patient and the extent of surgery.

The length of stay in the clinic is 1-2 nights (depends on health status).

What will happen in the recovery period?

The breasts will be bandage and support with compression bra which you should wear for 6-8 weeks in the day-time and at night. There will be considerable swelling and bruising of the breasts which usually lasts 2-6 weeks. Almost all the stitches used will simply dissolve, some of them need to be taken out in a 12 days.

Depending on the individual patient recovery times will vary. You should be up and about in a day or two but your breasts may still ache occasionally for a couple of weeks. Most patients will return to work with 14 days but this is down to the individual. Avoid any strenuous activity for at least 6 weeks and limit your exercises to stretching. You should avoid the sun for 3 months.

What can I expect from the surgery?

Your expectations need to be realistic. Most patiens are pleased with the outcome and find they have smaller, fighter, and firmer breasts. You will be freed from the physical discomfort of larger breasts and your body will be better proportioned therefore in most cases giving a new-found confidence.

Breast uplift

Breast uplift is used to raise and reshape breasts surgically to improve their appearance sometimes using implants. Breast drooping or breast sagging is a common problem following pregnancies, weight loss or ageing. Sagging occurs when the breast skin stretches, resulting in a less youthful appearance of the breasts.

What does the surgery involve?

Our surgeon does use a technique of vertical scar - only the scar around the areola and vertical line extending downwards. Excess breast tissue, fat and skin are then removed and the nipples and remaining underlying tissues are then moved to a new higher location. The skin from both sides of the breast is then brought down and around the areola shaping the new contour of the breast and sutured in a vertical line extending downwards from the nipple and along the lower crease of the breast.

How long does the surgery take?

The surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic and usually takes from two and half hours for both breasts. The procedure for breast uplift requires overnight stay in the clinic (depends on health status).

What will happen in the recovery period?

Following surgery you will experience some swelling and bruising of the breasts. The bruising usually lasts about 2-3 weeks. You will wear compression support bra for 6-8 weeks. Almost all the stitches used will simply dissolve, some of them need to be taken out in a 12 days.

Most patients are up and about in 2-4 days, but do not plan on returning to work for a week or more. You should avoid any vigorous exercise for 6 weeks but after that you can gradually resume these activities. You should avoid the sun for 3 months after the surgery.

What can I expect from the surgery?

Your expectations need to be realistic. The results of this operation are usually exellent and you can expect less dropping of your breasts with the nipples in a higher position.
